STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Husky women's golf team shot 15-over 303 in the second round of play at the NCAA East Region and sit eighth out of 24 teams competing at Penn State Golf Course. Washington is +23 overall (599).
With the top eight teams advancing on to the NCAA Championship, the 10th-seeded Huskies will enter Saturday's final round fending off the advances of teams below them. Four teams are within five strokes of the Huskies and another five teams are within 10 strokes.
At the same time, Washington is in a good place to advance up the leaderboard. The Huskies are within seven strokes of four teams.
"I told them it's about chasing teams, not protecting (a lead)," Husky Coach Mary Lou Mulflur said of the message she gave her team following Friday's round. "It's about going out there and playing with the same freedom and same mindset we had. It's not about hanging on, it's about moving up.
"Let's go see how many teams we can catch."

Senior Sadena Parks led the Washington five on Friday. A day after scuffling with a 6-over 78 on the 6,253-yard, par-72 Blue Course, Parks bounced back with a 1-under 71. She is tops among Huskies, sitting 31st on the individual leaderboard.
"Her emotions got the best of her yesterday," Mulfur said of the lone senior in the Huskies' lineup. "Today, she was a little more in check."
Parks jumped out of the gates with a birdie on No. 1 and later rolled in four more during the round. She averted a disastrous finish when she birdied the 18th hole after back-to-back bogeys on No.'s 16 and 17.
Parks was not alone in struggling down the stretch. The Huskies combined to shoot 9-over on the four finishing holes.
"We gave up too many shots on the last four holes. We were not playing great, but we were playing decent. They were the same holes we played well yesterday, so it was just frustrating for everybody," said Mulflur.
SooBin Kim is next among Huskies on the leaderboard. The freshman fired her second-consecutive round of 75 and sits tied for 40th.
Freshman Jennifer Yang entered the second round tied for 6th after shooting even-par 72 on Thursday. She was never able to get things going on Friday, shooting 80 and falling all the way to 55th.
Sophomore Kelli Bowers suffered the same fate as Yang. She entered today's action tied for fourth, but an 82 dashed her hopes of remaining in title contention and dropped her into a tie for 63rd.
Freshman Cyd Okino shot 77 on Friday after a 78 on Thursday. She is currently tied for 77th.
South Carolina, who entered the regional as the No. 8 seed, held onto the tournament lead for a second-straight day. The Gamecocks are +6 and hold a seven shot advantage over SEC rival and top-seeded Alabama. Florida makes it an all-SEC top three and sits +15.
The other schools within the top eight are: Texas A&M (+16), Duke (+19), Texas (+20) and Arizona (+22).
Katerina Ruzickova of Texas A&M continues to lead the individual race at -4 overall (140). She leads by three strokes over a pair of South Carolina golfers, Katie Burnett and Justine Dreher.
Final round action continues Saturday morning with teams teeing off starting at 7:30 a.m. ET.
