UW Men Wrap Up Marathon First Day At Pac-12 Championship

CORVALIS, Ore. -- The Husky men's golf team shot 368 and 366 on Friday to end up +14 after the first two rounds of the Pac-12 Men's Golf Championship at Trysting Tree Golf Club. Washington is eighth on the leaderboard, 15 shots off the lead.
"It was a pretty disappointing day," is how Coach Matt Thurmond summed up Friday for the Huskies. "There were some good moments here and there and the guys tried hard, but it was just very disappointing. We worked all year to be ready to play our best on a day like today and we didn't. We were sloppy and consequently we are 15 stokes out of the lead in eighth place.
"We're going to come back tomorrow and hopefully play better. It's like we're at halftime of a basketball game. So there is a lot of game left and hopefully we'll play a lot better the next two rounds."
The 12-team field battled wind and on-again, off-again rain throughout the grueling 36 holes at the 7,030-yard, par-72 course. Only UCLA ended the day under par, shooting 2-under 719. Oregon is second, five shots behind the Bruins and +2 overall.
California and USC each ended up +4 on the day and are tied for third. Host Oregon State is the only other team not double-digits over par, sitting at +7 and fifth on the leaderboard.
Washington State and Stanford are tied for 6th and both one shot better than UW at +13.

Twelve individuals finished the first 36 holes under par led by Oregon's Eugene Wong at -7. He is one shot better than Stanford's Andrew Yun and two shots ahead of UCLA's Patrick Cantlay.
Washington junior Chris Williams, just named to the 2012 U.S. Palmer Cup Team, leads the six Husky golfers competing this weekend. The Ben Hogan Award semifinalist sits tied for 7th after shooting 72-70 and ended up - 2 at 142.
Williams needed a birdie on the final hole of the second round to end up at -2. He had 9 birdies overall and was the only Husky to shoot par or better in both rounds.
Trevor Simsby is the only other Husky sitting in the individual top-20 in a 15th-place tie at 145 (+1). He was 1-over in the morning and shot even-par golf in the afternoon.
Freshman Cheng-Tsung Pan is just outside the top-20 in 21st at 2-over 146. He shot a pair of 73's.
Ty Chambers shot a couple of 75's and is tied for 42nd. Charlie Hughes is one shot back of Chambers at 151 and is tied for 52nd. He shot 75-76.
Larry Iverson shot 78-79 and is tied for 67th with 157.
Saturday's fourth round starts at 9:00 a.m. Washington is paired with Stanford and Colorado and will tee it up at 9:00 a.m. from the 10th hole.
