OJAI, Calif. - Freshman Julija Lukac got in the win column in the invitational draw today to lead the Husky women's tennis team on a rainy day one at the Pac-12 Championships held at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club. The Belgrade, Serbia native led the Huskies during the regular season with a 10-5 dual record.
Seeded third in the 32-player invitational draw, Lukac handled Arizona's Laura Oldham in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. She'll play her second round match tomorrow against USC's Alison Ramos, with the winner also playing their quarterfinal match later in the day.
Washington's two entries in the championship singles draw both fell to players ranked in the top-15 nationally. Senior Samantha Smith dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to 13th-ranked Zoe Scandalis of USC, the No. 6 seed in the loaded field. Sophomore Andjela Nemcevic lost a 6-3, 6-1 match to fifth-ranked, and third-seeded Mallory Burdette of Stanford who has been ranked No. 1 in the nation this season.
Also in the invitational draw, senior Adrijana Pavlovic fell short against Oregon's Lana Buttner, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.
Doubles play begins on Friday as well, with Smith and Lukac teaming in the invitational doubles draw, and Nemcevic pairing with freshman Riko Shimizu in the championship draw.
