OJAI, Calif. - On day two of the Pac-12 Women's Tennis Championships, freshman Julija Lukac went 1-1 in singles play, bowing out in the quarterfinals of the invitational draw, but remains alive in the doubles invite with senior Samantha Smith, as the two won their opening match today.
Doubles came first on a long day for the Serbian native, as she and Smith opened with an 8-3 win over Steur and Tiefel of Colorado in the first round. The pair will next face UCLA's Holly Fleming and Morgan Thomas tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. The winner will also play the semifinal match later on Saturday.
Lukac then was back on court for her round of 16 match against USC's Alison Ramos, a veteran player no stranger to the singles rankings. But Lukac got past the Trojan in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-4.
In the quarterfinals, Lukac faced Arizona senior Sarah Landsman. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Lukac retired while trailing 3-2 in the second set. It remains to be seen if she'll be able to bounce back for doubles on Saturday.
In the Championship Doubles Draw, sophomore Andjela Nemcevic and freshman Riko Shimizu struggled against USC's 54th-ranked duo of Zoe Scandalis and Valeria Pulido, falling by an 8-1 count.
