Williams Eliminated From Match Play At U.S. Amateur Publinx

STANFORD, Calif. - The Husky men's golf team ended up fifth out of 17 teams at the U.S. Intercollegiate at Stanford Golf Course after shooting 3-over 283 in Sunday's final round.

The Huskies totaled 863 over the three day tournament and were 23 strokes over par. They ended up 11 shots back of fourth place UCLA and 22 strokes behind the tournament winners Oregon.

"It was an okay day," was how Husky Coach Matt Thurmond described his team's round. "It was one of the better rounds of the day, but it wasn't a great day by any means. After such a poor day yesterday we responded well ."

"Overall it was a disappointing week," Thurmond continued. "We are ready for a couple days and anxious to get back and play at Arizona State next week and see if we can have a little bit better tournament."

Junior Chris Williams led Husky individuals by finishing tied for 12th. He shot 213 over three days and ended up +3.

Williams, a two-time All-American from Moscow, Idaho, shot 68 for the second time at the 6,742-yard, par-70 golf course. His 2-under round was highlighted by a pair of eagles during the day. He chipped in from just off the green on the par-5 seventh hole and he drained a putt from 23 feet out on the par-5 16th hole.

"Chris finally got a few good things to go his way and brought his game back," said UW Coach Matt Thurmond of the Huskies' all-time wins leader.

Trevor Simsby also had a strong final day for the Huskies, carding a 1-under 69. He duplicated Williams' eagle on No. 7 and added a birdie on the 14th hole. He ended up tied for 29th at +8 overall.

Freshman Cheng-Tsung Pan was second among Huskies in the standings, recording a 19th-place result. Pan was +1 on the day.

Junior Charlie Hughes tied for 32nd and sophomore Cory McElyea ended up tied for 46th.

Washington has one more tournament, the ASU Thunderbird at Karsten Golf Course this Friday and Saturday, before the Pac-12 Championship. This year's conference championship will be decided at Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore., April 27-29.
