BANDON, Ore. - Charlie Hughes shot 2-under 69 and is second among individuals to lead Washington during day one on Friday of the 54-hole Bandon Dunes Championship. Washington combined to shoot even-par 284 and leads Oregon by three strokes.

Hughes, the reigning tournament champion, trails Oregon's Jonathan Woo by one stroke and holds a one-shot advantage over four golfers, including his teammate Cheng-Tsung Pan. Hughes had a team-high five birdies on the day, including one on No. 18 to close out his round.

Pan shot 70 at the 6,743-yard Par-71 Bandon Trails course to join five other golfers out of 85 total competitors under par during Friday's first round.

Chris Williams was even after the day, giving the Huskies three golfers in the top-10. Williams, the world's No. 5 ranked amateur, is tied for seventh.

Washington won the event last season thanks largely to Hughes and Williams' one-two finish among individuals.

Cory McElyea shot 3-over 74 from the No. 5 spot in the lineup and is tied for 30th. He started on fire and was 2-under after six holes before back-to-back double bogeys pushed him to 2-over. He immediately answered with consecutive birdies, but went 3-over from there.

Trevor Simsby entered the week as the Huskies hottest golfer over the past month, and looked the part out of the gate with a birdie on the first hole. From there, he was birdieless and shot +6 to end the day with a 76. He is tied for 48th.

Tomorrow's second round gets rolling at 8:30 a.m.
