Huskies Move To 10-0 With 11-3 Victory

SAN DIEGO - Freshman Kasey Stanchek finished a great weekend in the circle earning her third win of the weekend in an 11-3 five-inning victory over UC Davis in the final game for the No. 7/9 Huskies at the Campbell/Cartier Classic in San Diego Sunday afternoon. UW improves to 10-0 on the season while UC Davis falls to 3-7.
The Huskies had nine hits and scored their 11 runs in four separate innings. UW took an early lead with three runs in the first and one in the second and then scored four more in the fourth and three in the fifth to win by way of mercy-rule.
"It's nice to finish the weekend with a win," said head coach Heather Tarr. "Our team is looking forward to next weekend in Cathedral City."
Stanchek (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) pitched the first three innings, allowing three runs on two hits with two strikeouts. They were the first runs she allowed all weekend long. Sophomore Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) finished the game, pitching 2.0 innings allowing just two hits and striking out two.
Sophomore Kelli Suguro (Kent, Wash.) went two-for-two with two RBI, two runs and two hits. Fellow sophomore Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) also had two hits in the game along with three runs. Senior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) added three runs and one hit. Seven different Huskies had hits in the game.
UW's three-run first inning began with Pohlman walking and stealing second base. She scored on a single to center field by sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.). Hayward scored on an error by the Aggie second baseman and Suguro scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.).
Suguro's first career hit, a triple down the left field line, drove in Pohlman for the Husky run in the second inning.
"Kasey did a great job in the circle again and Bry was able to come in later and close the game out," said Suguro. "Our offense was able to get the clutch hits when we needed to get runs on the board. It was another great weekend."
UC Davis got its first run, unearned, in the second inning as Kelly Harman scored.
The Huskies got out to an 8-1 lead in the top of the fourth as Hayward scored the first run on a single by Suguro. A single by freshman Kimberlee Souza (Waialua, Hawai'i) drove in Suguro. Senior Nikia Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) scored on a wild pitch and then freshman Kylee Lahners (Laguna Hills, Calif.) hit an RBI single.
"We had both good and bad innings," said Williams. "But the best part was bouncing back and scoring the runs after some mistakes on defense."
The first hit off of Stanchek was a single in the fourth. She then allowed a two-run double as UC Davis cut the lead to 8-3 which is when Walker entered the game.
Three more runs in the fifth by UW led to the eight-run win. Sophomore Marki Creger-Zier (Steilacoom, Wash.) scored an unearned run as a pinch runner to start the inning. After Williams reached base on a fielder's choice, both Hayward and Pohlman scored the final two runs on another UC Davis error.
Jessica Thweatt allowed six runs in 1.0 inning and was the pitcher of record for the Aggies. Justin Vela allowing five runs in 3.2 innings.
UW will take its undefeated record on the road to the Cathedral City Classic in Cathedral City, Calif., next week and will face five ranked teams.
