TEMPE, Ariz. - A tough Texas State team took an early lead over No. 12 UW early in the final game for the Huskies of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., Sunday morning, but UW rallied once again for the 12-3 victory in six innings.
The Huskies will leave Tempe with a 5-0 record in the tournament to open the 2012 season. Texas State falls to 1-4.
"Our mentality is to do our thing and for the pitchers to keep working and sticking to the plan and winning every inning," said junior Shawna Wright. "I think it's nice the first weekend out to get the jitters out. Everyone got hits so it was a good weekend for us all. It gave us a chance to see where we are at and even though we won them all we learned something and will keep it up next weekend."
UW had 14 hits in the game, led by Courtney Gano, Kimberlee Souza, Taylor Smith and Wright.
Senior Niki Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) had the first hit of the game for either team, a single up the middle to lead off the second.
The first hit for Texas State off of Husky start Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) came with one out in the second. It was a single up the middle by Anna Hernandez. Walker pitched 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out four.
Smith (Olympia, Wash.) hit a bloop single to left field to start the Husky third. She reached second on a ground out and then sophomore Marki Creger-Zier (Steilacoom, Wash.) entered to pinch run. Souza (Waialua, Hawai'i) then hit a two-RBI triple down the right field line to give UW the lead.
With two on and one out in the third, Texas State's Shelby Carnline hit a three-run home run to left field off of Walker as the Bobcats took a 3-2 lead.
Gano (West Covina, Calif.) led off the top of the fifth for UW with a double down the right field line. She reached third on a single by senior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) and scored on an error by the Bobcat third baseman.
The run would become earned on a single to left by Souza. Pohlman scored the go ahead run on a ground out by Williams. And on the next pitch, Lahners hit a two-run home run to center field as UW re-took the lead 6-3. After giving up a single to Wright, Texas State starter Chandler Hall was replaced by Crystal Alaniz.
Sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) took over in the circle for UW in the bottom of the fifth, picking up her first save of the season, allowing just two hits while striking out two in 2.0 innings.
Gano extended the Husky lead, 7-3 in the sixth with a solo home run to left field. With two outs, Inglesby hit a two-run home run to left center as Souza also scored. Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) drove in the 10th run as sophomore Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) scored. After a single up the middle by Hooch Fagaly (Chino, Calif.), Smith hit a two-RBI single to center field for a 12-3 lead.
The Huskies will head to San Diego next weekend for another pre-season tournament.
