SAN DIEGO - Sophomore Marki Creger-Zier (Steilacoom, Wash.) singled down the left field line in the bottom of the 10th inning as fellow classmate Whitney Jones (Upland, Calif.) scored the winning run from second in the 1-0 victory over UCF in San Diego Friday afternoon.
The Huskies remain undefeated with the win at 6-0 while UCF suffered its first loss and fell to 4-1. This was the first extra inning game for the Huskies this year and second shutout as sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) pitched the entire game. This was the longest outing in Inglesby's career, allowing just six hits with a season-high six strikeouts.
She improves to 4-0 on the season. Mackenzie Audas also pitched the entire game for the Knights, allowing just one run on four hits with four strikeouts.
After a scoreless seven innings, the first two extra innings were played as true innings and not using the international tiebreaker rules, however, in the ninth inning, the international tiebreaker rule entered the game. The rule states that the last out of the last inning be put on second base for each team in an attempt to speed up the game.
In the first inning in which a runner was put on base, Jones was sent to second to pinch run for Hooch Fagaly. With two outs, Creger-Zier came through with her first hit of 2012 and first RBI to give the Dawgs the win.
UW had just four hits in the game, one each by Creger-Zier, Kylee Lahners, Shawna Wright and Courtney Gano. 15 Huskies saw action in the game.
The Huskies will play their first true road game of 2012 as they face San Diego at approximately 5:30 p.m. tonight. Live stats can be found at www.gohuskies.com.
