TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 12 UW improved to 3-0 on the year with a convincing 10-2 victory in five innings over Idaho State on Saturday morning at the Tempe Sports Complex. Idaho State falls to 1-3 on the season.
Sophomore Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) got her second-straight start in the circle, but after the Bengals tied the game in the third, fellow sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) entered to finish the game and earn her second win of the year.
Senior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) led off the game with an infield single and stole her first base of the season. Pohlman would go on to steal third and sophomore Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) would draw a four-pitch walk.
Freshman Kimberlee Souza (Waialua, Hawai'i) hit a deep sacrifice fly to center field as Pohlman scored to put UW up 1-0.
"I think we finally woke up later in the game," Pohlman said. "We aren't used to playing this early but once we got our wits about us we took it to them and ended the game. It's great coming off a big win with a tough opponent coming up next. Taking the momentum from this game to the next game will be the key."
Defensively in the top of the second, UW converted its first double-play of the season from Courtney Gano to Kylee Lahners to Hooch Fagaly.
Junior Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) led off the second with a single to right. Lahners followed with a single to right of her own. With two outs, Pohlman singled to right scoring Wright from third for a 2-0 lead.
In the third, Walker walked Ashley Moeller and gave up her first runs of the season, a two run-home run to former Husky Amanda Fitzsimmons to right field.
With one out in the fourth, after a walk to Souza and one out, senior Nikia Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) smashed a two-run home run just inside the left field foul pole to give back the lead to UW, 4-2.
Inglesby entered to pitch in the top of the fourth, becoming the pitcher of record. She struck out the side.
With one out in the fourth, Gano singled to left. Sophomore Jerrin Fa'asua (Oceanside, Calif.) entered to pinch run. Fa'asua stole second and reached third on a throwing error by the Idaho State catcher. Pohlman drew a walk and with two outs Souza also walked to load the bases for Inglesby. On the first pitch to Inglesby, Fa'asua scored on a wild pitch and all runners advanced. UW took the 5-2 lead into the fifth.
To lead off the fifth, Williams singled to left. Sophomore Kelli Suguro (Kent, Wash.) entered to pinch run. Fagaly successfully sacrifice bunted to send Suguro to second. Wright drew a walk. Freshman Kylee Lahners (Laguna Hills, Calif.) hit a ground-rule double on her first pitch as Suguro scored the sixth UW run. Fa'asua then singled up the middle to drive in two more runs.
Pohlman ended the game with a two-run home run to right field for the eight-run rule victory.
Walker pitched 3.0 innings for UW, allowing two earned runs on one hit with two strikeouts. Inglesby pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three.
Fitzsimmons got the start in the circle for Idaho State and pitched the entire 4.1 innings, allowing 11 hits on 10 runs with five walks and two strikeouts.
