TEMPE, Ariz. - Sophomore Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) got the start in the circle, and after allowing her first runs of the season and being down early, helped rally her No. 12 Huskies to an impressive 10-3 victory over Northwestern in game two of the day for the Dawgs in Tempe, Ariz.
Inglesby and freshman Kylee Lahners (Laguna Hills, Calif.) each had home runs in the game and sophomore Hooch Fagaly (Chino, Calif.), returning from an ACL tear last season, had her first big game back offensively, leading the team with two hits and three RBIs.
"It felt great to contribute to the team on the field again," Fagaly said after her big game. "I felt like I never missed a beat. I think our team never gave up. It was early in the game (when we fell behind) and we all had a good mindset coming up to the plate and there was never a doubt that we weren't going to come back. We need to stay in our routines, keep the energy up and just keep doing what we are doing for the final game tomorrow."
In the bottom of the first, NU got to Inglesby early but the defense helped limit the damage. Emily Allard hit an infield single but was thrown out at second during the next at bat as UW junior Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) threw a laser to freshman Courtney Gano (West Covina, Calif.) covering second as Allard tried to steal.
With two outs, Lauren Ackeman walked and Marisa Bast hit a two-run home run to left field to give the Wildcats the early lead.
Inglesby drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the Husky second. Sophomore Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) then drew a walk to put two on with no outs. Inglesby was out at third on a fielder's choice in which Lahners reached base.
Fagaly's first hit of 2012 sent Hayward in from second to cut the lead to one. Sophomore Whitney Jones (Upland, Calif.) drew a walk on a violation by the pitcher with a 3-0 count which gave Jones the fourth ball and first base. With the next pitch, senior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) hit an infield single to tie the game as Lahners scores.
Senior Nikia Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) walked on a full count to lead off the third and reached second on a passed ball. Inglesby drew a walk as well on a full count. With a two-two count, Lahners hit her second career home run, a three-run shot to left center as UW took a 5-2 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Allard reached on an error and Anna Edwards walked. UW turned its second huge double play of the day to quickly get two outs. Edwards scored though on a single through the left side by the pitcher, Amy Letourneau. Inglesby would strikeout Olivia Duehr as the Huskies kept a 5-3 lead.
Once again, Inglesby helped herself at the plate, hitting a solo home run to left field to lead off the fifth.
NU threaten in the bottom of the fifth two runners on second and third with two outs but Inglesby came up wither another huge strikeout.
Pohlman singled up the middle to lead off the Husky sixth. Freshman Kimberlee Souza (Waialua, Hawaii'i) hit a sacrifice bunt to send Pohlman to second. The first pitch to Williams hit her lower left leg to put her on first base. Inglesby walked to load the bases as senior Jenna Clifton (Glendale, Ariz.) entered to pinch hit and singled to left to put UW up 7-3.
After a four-pitch walk to Wright to drive in the eighth run of the game for UW, Northwestern made a pitching change as Shelby Albanese entered the game. Fagaly hit a single up the middle driving in two more, making it a four-run inning for UW.
Inglesby allowed three runs on three hits in the circle while striking out four.
The Huskies finish play in the Kajikawa Classic on Sunday at 7:30 a.m. PST vs. Texas State. UW defeated Idaho State, 10-2, earlier in the day.
