TEMPE, Ariz. - Freshman Kimberlee Souza (Waialua, Hawai'i) got her first collegiate hit in the first and scored after an error by SJSU's shortstop trying to field a ground ball from senior Nikia Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) as UW took a 1-0 lead after the first and never looked back. UW got the 9-4 win improving to 2-0 on the year. SJSU falls to 0-2 on the season.
"It was nice to see Kimi have her first hit of the season be a clutch hit to clear the bases," said head coach Heather Tarr. "Kylee and Courtney hit the ball well today and we had a lot of opportunities to score."
Sophomore Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) got her first start in the circle on the year for UW. She got the win, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing just two hits and had a career-high five strikeouts.
The first hit off of Walker came on a double with two outs in the bottom of the third from Michelle Cox.
Shawna Wright (Lancaster, Calif.) led off the fourth with a single up the middle. Sophomore Kelli Suguro (Kent, Wash.) entered to pinch run. Freshman Courtney Gano (West Covina, Calif.) followed with a single of her own for her first collegiate hit.
Sophomore Jerrin Fa'asua (Oceanside), made her first start of the year in the outfield and got her first hit of the year, a single to load the bases. Senior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) then hit a bases-clearing double (her first hit of the season) to put the Dawgs up 4-0.
Souza reached on an infield single which sent Pohlman to third. Pohlman scored on a Souza stolen base and an error as the throw tried to catch Souza stealing. UW led 5-0 after four.
Fagaly reached on an error by the SJSU shortstop to lead off the fifth. Tara Bellusci (Anacortes, Wash.) made her collegiate debut pinch-running. Wright followed with a four-pitch walk. Gano then hit a three-run home run to left field. Fellow freshman Kylee Lahners (Laguna Hills, Calif.) hit a solo home run after getting a single earlier in the game.
With one out, Pohlman continued the inning with a single up the middle. Souza walked. In her first plate appearance of the year, sophomore Marki Creger-Zier (Steilacoom, Wash.) drew a walk. The Huskies left the bases loaded with a 9-0 lead in the fifth.
In the fifth, junior transfer Lindsay Monk (Menifee, Calif.) made her Husky debut behind the plate and freshman Kasey Stanchek (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) made her collegiate debut in the circle.
Stanchek got into a jam with the bases loaded as SJSU got two runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the game and escape the five-inning run rule.
SJSU got two more runs in the seventh to cut the lead to 9-4 but Stanchek was able to get out of the jam and finish the game. Stanchek pitched 3.0 innings, also striking out five, allowing four runs on four hits.
Jessica Ames started the game for SJSU and pitched until the Gano home run in the fifth. Lange entered to replace her and finished the game. Ames took the loss, allowing 10 hits, eight runs and five earned. Lange pitched 3.0 innings, allowing just one runs and two hits.
UW had 12 hits in the game, led by five different players with two-each.
UW continues play in the Kajikawa Class playing at the Tempe Sports Complex Saturday by taking on Idaho State at 7:30 a.m. PST and Northwestern at 1 p.m. PST. Live stats will be available for both games.
