SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- The Husky women's golf team entered foreign territory on Tuesday despite being firmly entrenched on familiar grounds.
Washington is first among 16 teams at its own tournament and has three players at the top of the leaderboard, led by sophomore SooBin Kim at 6-under 138. Golfweek's No. 1 ranked team has an eight-shot lead over UC Davis with 18 holes left to play at Sahalee Country Club. Remarkably, it marks the first time in 31 years of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational that the Huskies will take a lead into the final round and only twice before has a Husky golfer finished as medalist.
Coach Mary Lou Mulflur is hoping that last week's experience of when her squad took a two-shot lead into the final round of the Windy City Collegiate, only to see the advantage disappear to Arizona during the last day of play, will help the youthful Huskies in Wednesday's final round.
"I think our experience last week in Chicago will really help us," said Mulflur, who has watched her Huskies finish second in Illinois after a first-place in the season-opening Oregon State Invitational. "Just drawing from that and realizing that you have got to hit one shot at a time, stay in your game and not worry about anyone else.

"But, we know UC Davis is a good team and they will come out swinging, so we've just got to focus on us and enjoy it."
The Huskies have their eight-shot cushion despite not have Kim's total count towards the team's score. Kim, who fired the tournaments low round of 5-under 67 at the par-72 course, is competing as an individual after finishing last in team qualifying on Saturday.
"I cried for like four hours and ate a half bucket of ice cream," Kim said of how she reacted after her qualifying round on Saturday. "It was really, really hard, but I know that it was meant to be. I talked to all the coaches about it and I think it's a good learning experience for me."
Kim scorched the course on Tuesday after starting her round with a bogey on the opening hole. She shot 5 under on the next eight holes and also birdied No. 10 before finishing with eight-straight pars.
"I had a really bad start, but I tried to just keep it calm because I still had 17 more holes to play," Kim said. "I had a lot of fun today. After the really bad qualifying round, this whole week, I'm just trying to have fun and get myself together and just work on myself."
Among counting scores towards the team's total, freshman Charlotte Thomas and first-round leader Cyd Okino are leading the way. Both are even for the tournament and tied with Oregon State's Seshia Lei Telles for second. Thomas shot 73 and Okino fired 74 on Tuesday.
Sophomore Jennifer Yang had the best round out of the Huskies five-man lineup. She ended up 1 under for the day and moved up from 15th to sixth on the player leaderboard.
Freshman Ying Luo shot 75 to notch the other counting score for the Huskies. She is tied for 23rd at 8 over for the tournament.
Junior Kelli Bower shot a non-counting 76 and is tied for 26th at +10.
Among the Huskies other individual competitors, Monica Huang is tied for 35th and Brittany Tallman is tied for 67th.
The tournament continues tomorrow with tee times starting at 8:00 a.m. Washington starts teeing off at 9:15 and the Huskies are excited for an opportunity to make team history by winning the tournament.
"It would be incredible," said Thomas on the idea of winning tomorrow. "I would be so proud and so happy to be part of the team if we won our home tournament. It would mean everything to me.
"And after such a good start to the year it would be icing on the cake."
