Martinez Leads Huskies To First Victory Of 2011

SEATTLE - After scoring in the fifth minute, the UW women's soccer team gained confidence, playing its best game of the year on the way to a 3-1 victory over Seattle U in the Husky/Nike Invitational Sunday afternoon.
UW picked up its first win of the year, improving to 1-3-1. Seattle U falls to 4-2-0.
Freshman Chelsea Archer (Oakland, Calif.) scored the first goal of the match and of her career in the fifth minute on an assist by senior Sarah Martinez (Des Moines, Wash.). The shot was from the left side of the box to the upper right corner.
The Redhawks however tied the match going into the half with a goal in the 25th minute by Jordan Salisbury from a Mary Hill assist on a corner kick.
Martinez hit the game-winner in the 74th minute from the left side of the box. The goal was unassisted after it bounced around from a throw-in.
Sophomore Hillary Zevenbergen (Woodway, Calif.) added an insurance goal in the 86th minute, the first of her career. She took the ball one-on-one with the keeper and struck it in the left side of the net.
Senior Kelli Stewart (Mukilteo, Wash.) was fouled in the box with just a couple of minutes remaining and took the penalty kick but it was saved by Madison Goverde.
UW outshot Seattle U 25-7 and had 14 shots on goal, led by Martinez with five. Sophomore Lindsay Elston (Sammamish, Wash.) had four shots, while Stewart, senior Alex Webber (Poway, Calif.) and Archer each had three.
Senior Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann (Lakewood, Wash.) earned her first win in goal on the year making one save.
In game three of the Husky/Nike Invitational, Boston U defeated No. 8 Portland, 2-0.
The Husky/Nike Invitational team Champion was Boston U at 2-0. UW was second at 1-1, Seattle U third at 1-1 and Portland fourth at 0-2. The Offensive MVP was Kylie Strom from BU and the Defensive MVP was Madison Goverde from Seattle U.
