EUGENE, Ore. - Day two of the USA Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field was not quite as busy for the Husky contingent as day one was, or day three will be, but there were still some good showings, especially in the junior competitions. Current Husky freshman Derrick Daigre moved on in the junior 800-meter run.
Stueckle had a great first 300 meters and held the lead before running out of steam a little around the final turn, but she still held on to advance to the finals based on time, clocking 1:01.86. Incoming freshman Gianna Woodruff was in the earlier heat, and ran 1:03.10 which was 10th overall and would not advance.
In the 800-meter junior race, Derrick Daigre out of Kent-Meridian High School won the third of three semifinal heats in a time of 1:51.87 which was the day's third-fastest time. He'll advance to Saturday's final.
Former Husky great Jordan Boase drew a tough lane in the 400-meter dash semis, as he was out in lane eight, and he had a slower day than the prelims, running just 46.18 to place 15th overall and miss the final.
Lastly, sophomore Joe Zimmerman struggled mightily in the javelin, as he had two fouls on three attempts and the one legal mark was just 181-feet, about 50-feet short of his best marks this year.
Saturday will be a huge day for Huskies past and present, as J.J. Juilfs is in the junior pole vault, freshman Kasen Covington competes in the junior triple jump, Katie Follett runs in a captivating 1,500-meter final, and Stueckle and Daigre will run their junior finals. Boase could also be back in the 200-meter dash.
