McMorrow Just Short In NCAA First Round

PALO ALTO, Calif. - All-Pac-10 sophomore Kyle McMorrow saw his first trip to the NCAA Singles Championships ended by one of the tournament's top seeds today, but not without a fight. McMorrow, ranked 49th nationally, battled 14th-ranked Guillermo Gomez of Georgia Tech from start to finish, but Gomez took each set by one break of serve.
The loss brings the singles season to a close for McMorrow, who had a superb 32-9 overall record on the year, the third-most singles wins in UW history. He earned one of just six spots on the prestigious All-Pac-10 First Team and made his individual NCAA debut today at Stanford's Taube Tennis Center, where just last week he won both of his No. 2 singles matches in Washington's NCAA first round win over Cal Poly and second round defeat to Stanford.
But there will still be a big prize out there for McMorrow and senior Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, as the two are one of 32 doubles pairs entered in the NCAA Doubles Championships, which begin tomorrow.
McMorrow had a tough draw against the seeded Yellow Jacket, but took the first set to 5-all before Gomez grabbed the last two games for the 7-5 first set win. The second set would also be a matter of just one break in the end, as Gomez closed out the match with a 6-4 second set.
