TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Washington men's golf team combined to shoot 2-over 286 in the second round of the NCAA Southwest Regional and remain in contention for one of five spots at the championship to be held at Oklahoma State's Karsten Golf Course from May 30-June 4.
The Huskies enter Saturday's final round tied for fifth with California at -3 (565) and are within four strokes of second-place Arizona. San Diego State is -12 overall to lead the 14 teams that make up the Southwest Region.

Washington remains in contention of advancing to its ninth championship in 10 years with Matt Thurmond as head coach despite not playing its best round.
"I thought today was a tough day," said Thurmond from Omni Tucson National Golf Resort. "There were a lot of lip-outs, a couple of really bad breaks and we got off to a poor start. We never really got anything going, but we hung in there well.
"I'm actually pretty happy," Thurmond finished.
For a second-consecutive day, Washington was led by the play of its two seniors. Tze Huang Choo and Kevin Spooner shot 70 and 71, respectively, and are tied for eighth at 139 (-3) in the field of 75.
Choo converted three birdies on the back nine to aid in his low score, but it took awhile for the senior from Singapore to get rolling.
"Today definitely wasn't as smooth," Choo said. "Yesterday I was putting better. I missed a few today, and didn't have any birdies on the front nine, but I did get a couple on the back. I told myself that I had to be patient, and the birdies would come, and they did. I bogeyed the last hole, but I can't complain. Hopefully, we'll finish this weekend in a position to make our run through to nationals."
Spooner also struggled to get going, making the turn on nine at +2. But, a pair of birdies on 11 and 12 got him to even, where he would end the day.
"I had a pretty disappointing start, missed a few putts that I was making yesterday, but I battled back. Through the front nine I was two over, but I was able to get to two under through the back nine. Getting myself back to even was pretty big," said Spooner.
The Huskies have been accustomed to being led by their sophomores - Chris Williams and Charlie Hughes - so UW coach Matt Thurmond is pleased that his team has been able to ride the backs of his veterans for a change.
"Again our seniors did a really good job. It could have gotten a lot worse out there. Chris and Charlie have carried us all year, so to be where we are without them playing the way they expect ... we have got to be happy with that," said Thurmond.
Williams, who has finished first or second in all but one of 12 tournaments, is tied for 24th on the leaderboard at +1. He shot a 1-over 72 on Friday and carded one of two eagles on the day by Huskies.
Jens Bracht holds the honor of netting the only other eagle of the day for the Huskies. The junior holed out from 50 yards on the par-5 eighth hole. Bracht is tied for 30th at +2.
Hughes shot 75 on Friday and tied for 53rd overall.
Despite what is at stake in Saturday's final round, Thurmond and his Huskies are not changing their routine. They will have fun on Friday night at the resort hotel they are staying and whatever happens on Saturday happens.
"The guys that do this (play golf), do it because they love to compete," said Thurmond. "We're on the (cutline) and we have one day to play a great round of golf. If we do, we get to go to the national championships. That right there is just so awesome.
"We're all just excited. It is fun that it all comes down to one day and we'll see what we can do."
