CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 15 Huskies made a statement in the final regular season game on Saturday afternoon at Oregon State rallying for four runs in the seventh inning for a 5-4 victory to take the series. UW ends the regular season with a 34-14 overall record and a 9-12 Pac-10 record. Oregon State's season ends at 19-28 and 2-19.
“I am so proud of how we all fought today,” said senior Jenn Salling. “Our team is incredibly dangerous when we put pressure on the defense and we did exactly that in the last inning.”
The Huskies will now await the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday at 7 p.m. PT to see where they are selected for the NCAA Tournament. Fans can watch the show live on ESPNU.
Oregon State struck first in the second inning as Ashley Sanchez scored on a double by Nikki Chandler.
With one out in the third junior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) singled and advanced to second. Salling (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) tied the game on a single to right field.
Oregon State took control, scoring three runs over the next two innings
Down to their last three outs, the Huskies showed their offensive power to gain momentum heading into the NCAA Tournament. Senior Ashley Tuiasosopo (Woodinville, Wash.) led off the inning reaching on an error. Freshman Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) singled, followed by another single by Pohlman to load the bases.
Salling was hit by a pitch to score the second Husky run. The ever-so-dangerous Niki Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) then came up and hit a bases loaded three-RBI triple to win the game.
“Getting this final win before heading into the tournament is huge,” Williams said after the game. “There is nothing better than going into postseason play after a win, especially after a great game like we had today. This definitely gives us momentum for next week and also a fun bus ride back to Seattle.”
Senior Morgan Stuart (Riverside, Calif.) was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning to tie the school record of 45 set by Kim DePaul in 2001.
“It was awesome to see our team fight, get runners on and continue to put pressure on,” Stuart said. “Nikia grinding through like she did showed how this team battles and how we will be a force (to be reckoned with) the tournament.”
Freshman Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) got the start for UW in the circle, her 10th of the year. She allowed three runs on five hits in 2.1 innings. Freshman Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) entered in relief earning the win and improving to 22-8 on the year. She allow on run on seven hits in 4.2 innings.
“It was a great team win for us today,” said Pohlman. “People got the job down and it was a great way to build momentum for the postseason.”
