LOS ANGELES – With the series already decided, the No. 9/11 UW softball team was just looking to snap its four-game losing streak. It took nine innings on Saturday but the Huskies prevailed, 4-3, over No. 11/13 UCLA. It was the first win in Los Angeles for UW since 2007.
The Huskies improve to 31-8 overall and 6-6 in the Pac-10 while UCLA falls to 31-10 and 7-5. Washington also handed UCLA its first lost in extra innings this year (3-1). UW improves to 4-1 in such contests.
Just like the first two games, the Huskies had early chances to score with the bases loaded in the second but were unable to get anything across.
The Bruins took advantage in the third with a solo home run by GiOnna DiSalvatore.
UCLA's freshman pitcher Jessica Hall got the start after picking up the win Saturday. She left in the third and was not factored into the decision. Donna Kerr entered in relief and picked up the loss.
Washington tied the game on an RBI double in the fourth by freshman Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.). Senior Morgan Stuart scored (Riverside, Calif.) scored after being hit by a pitch.
All weekend the Bruins hurt UW with the long ball and Alyssa Tiumalu hit a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth to re-take the lead 2-1.
Down to their final out in the top of the seventh, junior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) singled. Senior Jenn Salling (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) hit an RBI double to tie the game at 2-2.
Inglesby, who pitched every inning against the Bruins on the weekend, made quick work of the Bruins in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extras. She improved to 19-5 with the win, allowing three runs on seven hits in the game.
With one out in the eighth, Inglesby hit a solo home run to center, her 10th of the year for a one-run lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, UCLA quickly put the winning run on second with no outs. A great defensive play by Stuart, a strikeout by Inglesby put the Huskies in the driver's seat, needing just one strike for the win.
However, B.B. Bates walked to load the bases and Katie Schroeder earned a walk as well to walk in the tying run. A ground out to Salling ended the inning.
With one out in the ninth, Salling hit her sixth home run of the season for a 4-3 Husky lead.
A double play turned by Salling and Williams ended the game.
The Huskies outhit the Bruins for the second-straight game, 9-7. Inglesby had a team-high three hits.
UW will continue its stretch of nine-straight Pac-10 games on the road next weekend, traveling to Palo Alto, Calif., in a meeting with the Stanford Cardinal.
