TEMPE, Ariz. - The Husky women's golf team ended up eighth and junior Sedena Parks was the top UW individual ending up tied for 19th at the Pac-10 Championships which concluded on Tuesday at Arizona State's Karsten Golf Course.
Washington shot a 308 (+20) to finish at +50 for the tournament. USC won the team title after shooting even-par golf for the 54-hole conference championship to win by five strokes over Arizona.
Washington entered the final round six strokes behind Arizona State and 10 strokes behind Oregon. The goal for the day was to climb past those two teams, but it was not meant to be for the Huskies in the sun-soaked desert.
"We have the talent and skill, we just have not been able to bring it when we need to," said a disappointed Husky Coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "Somehow or another we need to figure it out."
Next up for the Huskies is the NCAA West Regional at their home course Washington National. Mulflur feels playing on familiar turf could be just what the doctor ordered to help turn things around.
"It's absolutely an advantage and we need to capitalize on it. We need to defend it and play it like it's our home course," said Mulflur about the NCAA's, which will be held in Auburn, Wash. from May 5-7.
Sophia Popov gave USC a clean sweep of the team and individual crowns by winning medalist honors in a playoff over UCLA's Tiffany Lua. The duo ended up regulation tied at -6.
Parks shot a 4-over 76 on Tuesday, the best round among Huskies. She ended up at 223 (+7) overall to tie with two other golfers for 19th.
After Parks, Anya Alvarez was the next highest UW finisher. She ended up tied for 29th after she fired a 5-over 77 to end up at +12. Alvarez was named honorable mention All-Pac-10 after the conclusion of the tournament.
Freshman A Ram Choi finished tied for 37th, while freshman Kelli Bowers and junior Darcie Richmond tied for 40th.
Notes: No Huskies earned first or second-team all-conference honors, but Anya Alvarez was named honorable mention.
