BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. -- The Husky women's golf team is 8th out of 17th teams and Anya Alvarez is tied for 15th among individuals after the first round of the Bryan National Collegiate at the Bryan Park Champions Course.
The Huskies started strong and made the turn at No. 9 in third at +3. The No. 31 Dawgs couldn't maintain their momentum down the stretch and ended up at +16 (304). Four of the five Huskies bogeyed No. 18.
"We played well early," said coach Mary Lou Mulflur, "but just weren't able to finish. We were feeling good about things, but for whatever reason, we weren't able to get it done."
Despite the team's struggles down the stretch, Mulflur was pleased with the way her team stayed out of trouble on the course.
"I thought we really improved in that we only had two holes that were bigger than bogey, which we have been trying to eliminate. That's a positive, especially on this golf course," said Mulflur. "It is a really hard golf course and anytime our players got in trouble, they got out of it relatively unscathed."
The 16th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers lead the field after an even par round of 288. Wake Forest is second, six strokes back of the Vols.
Washington's charge is once again being led by Alvarez. The senior from Jenks, Okla. shot a 2-over 74 on the 6,386-yard course and is tied with 11 other competitors. She led the team with four birdies, but also mixed in six bogeys.
Alvarez is four strokes behind leaders Erica Popson of Tennessee and Michelle Shin of Wake Forest, who shot 2-under 70. Only three golfers were under-par all day.
UW freshman Kelli Bowers is just one stroke behind Alvarez after a 73. She is tied for 27th after a round that included just one birdie, but led the team with just four holes of bogey or worse.
Senior Karinn Dickinson is tied for 42nd after shooting a 77, freshman A Ram Choi is tied for 51st after a 78 and Sadena Parks is tied for 60th after a 79.
Tomorrow's action has been moved to a shotgun format beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET. Temperatures are expected to be in the 50s with rain showers.
