SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Husky women's tennis team is not short on heart, but their roster is not long, with just eight players for six spots, one of whom just this weekend gained eligibility. Down a starter today, and at the end of a fourth road trip in four weeks, the 15th-ranked Huskies ran out of gas in San Diego, falling 4-3 to the Toreros in San Diego.
It's the first loss of the season for the Huskies, who drop to 5-1, and will finally have their home opener next Friday against Ole Miss.
Washington's All-American duo of Venise Chan and Denise Dy both cruised through with ease today. The pair won their No. 1 doubles match, 8-3, over Juliette Coupez and Stephanie Hoffpauir, but San Diego took the second and third doubles matches to put UW in a 1-0 hole for the second day in a row.
55th-ranked Chan then defeated Hoffpauir, a UCLA transfer, at the No. 1 singles spot, 6-1, 6-4. Dy, ranked sixth, moved to No. 2 singles today and continued on her winning ways with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Josymar Escalona. Chan and Dy are both 6-0 in dual play now.
Missing from action today was senior Lina Xu, who posted a win at No. 5 singles for UW on Saturday. That bumped up senior Aleksandra Krsljanin to the No. 5 spot, and she had her three-match win streak ended by Anna Depenau, 6-3, 6-0. Newcomer Adrijana Pavlovic moved into the singles lineup for the first time in her young Husky career, and she gave a good fight, but lost 6-1, 7-6 (4) to Marite Raygada.
Trailing 2-3, it came down to the third and fourth singles matches. At the No. 4 spot, freshman Andjela Nemcevic stepped up big with an exhausting 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Coupez. That tied it at 3-3 with junior Samantha Smith's match against Laura Claus remaining. Smith had played a three-setter on Saturday while USD had been off all week. Their match went as far as it could go. After Claus won the first set, 6-3, Smith fought to extend it with a 7-5 second set win. The third set went all the way to a tiebreak, but Claus clinched the upset with a 7-5 win the breaker.
