SAN DIEGO - The well-traveled Husky women's tennis team picked up another key road win today, handling San Diego State, 6-1, this afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center. The 15th-ranked Huskies improve to 5-0 on the year, all wins coming away from home.
Washington dropped the doubles point, but retook control by winning all six of the first sets in singles. It was a complete effort up and down the lineup, as UW was tested in each position but reached the finish line first at every spot.
"San Diego State has always been a bit of a thorn in our side, so I was happy with the way we were able to not get rattled after doubles and give a solid effort," said Head Coach Jill Hultquist.
UW's three seniors all delivered straight set wins. Venise Chan posted a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over Alicia Aguilar, Lina Xu had a 6-3, 6-4 win over Emma Cioffi at No. 5, and Aleksandra Krsljanin won her third straight match at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-4 over Laura Antonana Iriarte. Chan's win moves her into sole possession of fourth on the UW career singles wins list with 82, breaking a tie with 2001-04 letterwinner Erin Hoe.
Freshman Andjela Nemcevic played a couple tight sets, as has been typical for the rookie thus far, and took both of them by 7-5 scores over Sierra Ellison at fourth singles.
The final two matches went to third set super-tiebreaks after the Dawgs had clinched the win. Sixth-ranked junior Denise Dy was taken to a third by Julia Trunk at No. 1 singles, but took the tiebreak, 10-2, to avoid the upset. Junior Samantha Smith also lost a second set tiebreak that could have ended it, but then rebounded in the super-tiebreak for a 6-3, 6-7, (10-5) win.
Washington dropped the doubles point, but Dy and Chan picked up yet another ranked win, although this one ended halfway through, as the 27th-ranked Ellison sisters were forced to retire as UW led, 3-1. The Aztecs clinched the point with a 9-7 win at No. 2 doubles over Nemcevic and Smith. New Husky Adrijana Pavlovic saw her first action, playing doubles with Lina Xu, but the pair fell, 8-3.
Sunday brings another tough road dual, as UW faces a talented San Diego squad in a match set to begin at 10 a.m. The Huskies would like nothing better than to return for their home opener with a 6-0 record, if they can get past the Toreros.
