CHALOTTESVILLE, Va. - The 18th-ranked Husky women's tennis team had to do great things just to reach the final site of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, but Washington (7-4) left the Boar's Head Sports Club tonight without a victory to show for its time at the prestigious event, as 13th-ranked Georgia Tech held off the Huskies, 4-2.
Once again, UW's points were provided by the powerhouse combo of sixth-ranked Denise Dy and 26th-ranked Venise Chan at first and second singles, respectively. Dy defeated 105th-ranked Christina Ngo in the top spot, 6-2, 6-1, while Chan dealt 61st-ranked Jillian O'Neill a 6-3, 6-3 defeat. Both matches were repeats of the opening week of the 2011 season, when UW faced the Yellow Jackets in the Michigan Invitational, and Dy and Chan beat the same Tech top two on that day.
But Washington couldn't scratch out a point down the rest of the lineup, as it had done well earlier in the year in upset wins over Texas, Florida State, and Mississippi. Senior Aleksandra Krsljanin was the only other Husky to take a set, winning the opener 6-3 against Elizabeth Kilborn at No. 5 singles, but Kilborn took the second and the two did not get to finish. Georgia Tech had straight set wins at the three, four, and six spots to combine with a doubles point for the victory.
Chan and Dy each came out of the weekend 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles. That moves them up to a symmetrical 10-0 each in dual singles play, and 12-0 overall this year as a doubles tandem.
The Huskies were making their first appearance at the final site of National Team Indoors since 2005. It was their fifth overall appearance, but the first time they did not pick up at least one win during their stay.
Washington still won't have much time to rest, as the Huskies go back on the road next week to Texas to face TCU on Feb. 25 and Texas A&M on Feb. 26.
