Simsby Sixth In Battle at the Beach

NEWPORT, Calif. -- Freshman Trevor Simsby turned in his second-consecutive solid 18 holes of golf at Pelican Hills Golf Club, but the Husky men's golf team had their toughest combined round during Tuesday's final round and ended up tied for third in the Battle at the Beach. *[Golfstat.com has Augusta State's score wrong]
Simsby was even overall for the tournament (74-65-71-210) and ended up in sixth place out of 82 competitors. Simsby followed up Monday's 65 with a respectable 71 on the 6,900-yard, par-70 North Course.
Conditions at the course were ideal for golf, but after practicing all winter in the Northwest, the firm greens of the coastal-California course caught up to the Huskies. Kevin Spooner was the only Washington golfer under-par on Tuesday, shooting a 70.
"With our five and six guys (Simsby and Spooner) playing the way they did today, I would have thought that we would have won," said Husky coach Matt Thurmond, whose Huskies started the day in second, two-strokes behind San Diego.
"But we didn't get the job done. It's painful as competitors to know that we had a chance to win and that we didn't quite come through. As golf is, you don't win that often, but it was fun that we had a chance."
Washington shot a 13-over 363 to finish +16 and in a tie with Augusta State for third. UCLA claimed the team title at +7, three strokes better than San Diego.
Kenneth McCready of San Diego basically led from start to finish and won at -7 overall. He was two strokes better than UCLA's Patrick Cantlay.
Sophomore Charlie Hughes notched a top-10 finishes, ending up at 2-over 212. After a pair of 70s, Hughes settled for a 2-over 72 on Tuesday.
Defending tournament champion Chris Williams had a tough go at it during the final 18. The Moscow, Idaho native carded five bogeys and a double-bogey and finished 5-over 75 for the day. He ended up +4 for the tournament and tied for 14th.
Tze Huang Choo and Ty Chambers also shot a 75 in the final round. Chambers ended up tying for 23rd and Choo was 35th.
The Dawgs are off for almost two weeks before returning to the course for the USC Intrecollegiate from Feb. 28-March 1.
