UW Ends Up Tied For 14th Down In The Desert

HONOLULU, Hawai'i -- Spurred on by a second-place individual finish from Sadena Parks, the Washington Women's Golf team ended the fall on Wednesday by taking home the second-place team trophy at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational hosted by the University of Hawai'i and Kapolei Golf Course.

Parks fired a 4-under 68 while Soo Bin Kim shot 2-under 70 to help the Huskies combine to go 3-under 285 for the day. Washington finished the tournament at +5 (869).

"Today was a total team effort and I'm so happy for Sadena and her strong second place finish this week," UW Head Coach Mary Lou Mulflur said from Oahu. "We are learning that we don't have to rely on just one person. It seems to be a different person at each tournament that us stepping up to contribute. It is great to have that depth as a team.

"We have grown tremendously since our first tournament at WSU. We are looking forward to working hard for the next few months."

Top-ranked UCLA ran away from the field for a 20 stroke victory over the second-place Huskies, but Washington was equally impressive in distancing themselves from the rest of the field. Stanford was 14 strokes behind the ninth-ranked Huskies to finish third out of 12 teams.

Parks finished the 54-hole tournament at 3-under 213 to tie with two other golfers for runner-up honors. Lee Lopez of UCLA won by four strokes at -7.

The second-place finish was a career best and marked just the third time in four years she has ended in the top-10.

Parks, a senior from Bethel, Wash., earned low round of the day honors after shooting a bogey-free 68. She made three birdies on the front nine and added another one on the 14th hole.

Freshman Jennifer Yang will enter the spring on a high note, tying for eighth after ending up +1 for the tournament. She shot 73 on Wednesday after scoring a pair of 72s on Tuesday.

Soo Bin Kim rallied behind her 70 to move up the leaderboard. She ended the tournament alone in 12th at +4 (220) after shooting a couple of 3-over 75s in Monday's first and second rounds. In the shotgun formatted final round, Kim started from No. 4 and bogeyed the hole. She would birdie the next three consecutive holes and scored pars on the final 14 holes.

Cyd Okino and Kelli Bowers ended up tied for 16th after each shooting 7-over 223. Okino, from Honolulu's Punahou HS, shot 75, while Bowers shot 74 in the final round.

During the fall, Washington ended up winning one tournament (The Cougar Cup), finishing second in Hawai'i, had a pair of third-places (Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational and Stanford Intercollegiate) and were 10th at the Pac-12/SEC Challenge.

The Huskies are off until mid-February when they open the spring season at the Peg Barnard.
