PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - A Top-10 opponent is a tough way to start a season, even for a senior as accomplished as Denise Dy. The Husky All-American was a couple points from victory, but 10th-ranked Marta Lesniak of SMU won a second set tiebreak and then the third set to move on to the round of 16 at the season-opening ITA All-American Championships.
Dy, ranked fourth nationally, will move into the consolation draw at the Riviera Tennis Club, which begins on Friday.
Today's match was a rematch of a quarterfinal showdown between the two at the same tournament last year, which also went down to the wire before Dy won a third-set tiebreak. The turning point today was the second set breaker. Dy won the first set, 6-3, and could have closed it out in straight sets, but Lesniak won the second set tiebreak, 7-4. She carried the momentum to a 6-2 third set win.
