Dickinson Rallies For Cougar Cup Win

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Karinn Dickinson tied for first in the individual competition on Wednesday and the Husky "A" team took second in the season-opening Cougar Cup at Palouse Ridge Golf Course in Pullman.
Dickinson, a senior from Mukilteo, Wash., had four birdies during a five-hole stretch on No. 10-15, but a double-bogey on No. 18 cost her the chance for an outright win. Dickinson entered the final round in fourth but shot a 1-under 71 to end up tied for first with Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro. Both golfers finished at +4 (220).
Despite the disappointing finish, Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur thinks Dickinson should feel good about earning the second win of her college career.
"I expect her to keep playing the way she has been," said Mulflur. "She could not have shot any higher today...she could have just as easily have shot a 66 or 67. She played really well and worked incredibly hard over the summer. I think she's on the right path and headed in the right direction."
Dickinson wasn't the only player that left Mulflur feeling confident about the team she has this year. Freshman Kelli Bowers ended up with a top-10 finish in the first tournament of her college career, while juniors Darcie Richmond and Sadena Parks each finished in the top-15. Bowers shot a 1-under 71 - joining Dickinson, Alvarez and Mortellaro as the only golfers in the red on Wednesday - and finished tied for seventh at +12 overall. Richmond notched the first top-10 of her career, tying for 10th at +14, while Parks was 13th at +16.
Senior Anya Alvarez equaled the best round of the day with a 2-under 70 and was -3 in the two rounds she completed.
"We played a lot better yesterday and today," said Mulflur of the Huskies that scored under 300 for a second-consecutive round. "We made some mistakes coming in and just couldn't get one more score that we needed to win."
Washington State took home the team trophy finishing one-stroke better than Washington's "A" team. The "A" team consisted of Dickinson, Alvarez, Parks, A Ram Choi and Nicole Ferrero. The Washington "B" team was seventh overall and consisted of Bowers, Richmond, Brittany Tallman, Katie Saucier and Keely Lavelle.
Tallman (30th) and Ferrero (35th) each notched career-best finishes. Choi was 45th, Saucier 52nd and Lavelle 66th.
The Huskies return to action Oct. 4-6 in the UW-hosted Edean Ihlanfeldt Tournament, which will be held at the Tacoma Country Club.
