Husky Men Impressive In Fall Debut

AUBURN, Wash. -- The sixth-ranked Husky men's golf team made their season debut on Monday in the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational at Washington National Golf Course and are second overall after playing 36 holes.
Washington is 2-under overall (290-276-566) as a team despite not having any individuals under par through two rounds. Pepperdine has an eight stroke lead over the Huskies at -10 overall. San Diego State is even par and in third. Missouri is +3 and in fourth, followed by Oregon at +10.
Josh Anderson of Pepperdine leads all individuals at 6-under overall. Three golfers - Andrew Widmar (Pepperdine), Matt Hansen (UC Davis) and Jace Long (Missouri) - are tied for second at -3. Sophomores Charlie Hughes and Chris Williams - the only holdovers that competed for Washington at the 2010 NCAA Championships - shot even par golf and tied for 14th to lead the Huskies.
Hughes followed up a first round 74 with a 4-under 68 in the afternoon to record the low-round by a Husky. He entered the second round tied for 40th and moved up 26 spots. Williams shot a 2-under 70 in the afternoon to catch up with the pack.
"Hopefully those guys are a lot better than they were in their freshman year...and they were awesome last season," said Husky head coach Matt Thurmond. "They are going to be carrying the team this year, so it was exciting to see them do that in their first tournament."
Ty Chambers, a junior who saw limited action in 2009-10, shot back-to-back 1-over 73's and is tied for 22nd. He is the only other Husky among the top-25 entering Tuesday's final round.
Jens Bracht led the Huskies in the morning with a 3-under 69, but he struggled with an afternoon round of 79 that included a nine on the par-4 10th hole. He ended up +4 on the day and is tied for 28th. Bracht started his day with a birdie on No. 1 and followed that up by holing his second shot from around 150-yards out for an eagle.
Right there with Bracht is freshman Cory McElyea, who shot a 1-under 71 in the second round and to drop to +4.
Freshman Gerrit Chambers, the younger brother of Ty, leads four Huskies that are competing as individuals at the tournament. He is tied for 57th at +9 overall. Kevin Spooner is +15, Trevor Simsby is +17 and Larry Iverson III is +22.
Play resumes Tuesday morning with teams teeing off at 7:30 a.m. Washington begins teeing off from No. 1 at 9:00 a.m.
