SEATTLE - The Husky men's soccer team hit the field for a scrimmage against Simon Fraser on Saturday night at the Husky Soccer Stadium.
Please note that due to scrimmage rules that affect Simon Fraser, the result of this match along with official statistics or any stats that involve Simon Fraser student-athlete can't be posted or recorded.
"It was a tough game in the middle of training camp," said head coach Dean Wurzberger. "It's tricky train to train through games, especially after training hard this morning. We wanted to compete and be competitive right away and we did that."
Huskies got a goal when a Simon Fraser player knocked it in the net in the 16th minute. Senior transfer Daniel Gray then scored on a cross from the right side from Alex Klein in the 83rd minute.
"We got to test everyone at different positions and it was good to get a game in," said senior Taylor Mueller. "We took a lot out of this game and overall everyone played pretty well."
After beginning training on Wednesday of this past week, it was a good opportunity for the newcomers to get their feet wet on the field for the first time in a collegiate setting. Several newcomers got the start, including freshmen Taylor Peay, Michael Harris and transfer Chris Brundage.
Junior Brent Richards and senior Matt Van Houten led the team with four shots each. Seniors Brad Keller and Gray had three each.
Senior Stephen Fung made three saves in goal in the first half.
"This was the first time our newcomers saw this type of speed and intensity and it was important to get that out of the way early," Wurzberger added. "A lot of players played and we are still working out where certain players are going to play, especially the newcomers. Overall I was pleased that we had the game and we will grow from this and be a step ahead for the game next week. Daniel is an experienced player and you have to build around him. When you get him the ball he is a threat, he can shoot from distance and he is a dangerous passer. Taylor (Peay) never really played right back, so he is training into a new position. He is very athletic, very smooth and he will work on learning his defensive responsibility. Michael did a good job as he played three different positions tonight. Zach Portillos in the second half on the left said proved he has a good left foot. He is tough and won a few head balls which I was pleased with. Spencer Richey did well in the goal in the second half as well. Chris (Brundage) has great promise. He is a very good athlete, is open to learning and he is going to be a good player."
