SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- The 25th ranked Husky men's golf team heads to the final round of the Gifford Championship in fifth place out of 12 teams thanks in large part to the stellar play of the team's two freshmen participating in the tournament.
Washington combined to shoot a 9-over 364 in Tuesday's second round at CordeValle Resort Course and are +24 overall. The Huskies are 18 strokes behind tournament-leading Stanford, who has an 11-stroke lead over UCLA. USC is third, followed by Northwestern and Washington.
"The day was decent," said coach Matt Thurmond. "I challenged them this week to play with a sense of urgency and greater will on every shot. They have done a good job of doing that. Tomorrow is our last round of the fall and we all want to end our fall season well."
UCLA's Patrick Cantlay leads the field and is one of four golfer under par overall at -6. Stanford's David Chung is second at -5, followed by his teammate Sihwan Kim at -3 and Augusta State's Henrik Norlander.
Sitting in fifth at even-par overall is UW freshman Cory McElyea. The California native shot a team-best 1-under 70 at the Par-71 course for a total of 142.
McElyea's classmate (and roommate) Trevor Simsby shot a 1-over 72 on Tuesday and is +4 overall at 146. He is the next highest Husky on the leaderboard in a tie for 13th.
"It's cool that Cory and Trevor are playing together and leading us," said Thurmond. Players are given the unique opportunity to play with their teammates as the tournament format is play six, count five scores.
"That's really the story of the event so far for us - the great play of the freshmen. They're getting a lot out of the rounds, finding ways to make pars and showing a lot of maturity and steadiness."
Sophomore Chris Williams is next on the leaderboard for the Dawgs carding an even-par 71 to stay at +5 overall. He is tied for 19th.
Charlie Hughes shot his second-consecutive round of 74 and is tied for 24th at +6.
Kevin Spooner shot a 77, while Ty Chambers shot a 78. Spooner is tied for 45th at +9, while Chambers is tied for 73rd at +17.
