ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- The Husky men's golf team rebounded from a rough first round at the U.S. Collegiate Championship and moved up to 10th in the standings on Tuesday. Washington shot a combined 293 (+5) and are +18 overall for the three-day tournament being hosted by Georgia Tech at The Golf Club of Georgia's Lakeside Course.
The Yellow Jackets have cruised through the first two rounds of the tournament and will take an 11-shot lead into Tuesday's final round.
Georgia Tech junior James White followed his magical 62 on opening day with a second-round 70 to lead the individual race by six strokes at 12-under 132.
After a 301 in Sunday's first round, UW head coach Matt Thurmond was happy overall with the way his team fought back.
"We kind of had the same start as yesterday," explained Thurmond. "But, we did a better job of hanging in there today and I was really proud of the way we played on the back nine. It ended up feeling like a pretty good day."
Junior Jens Bracht led the Husky five-man contingent for a second-consecutive day by shooting an even par 72. He had a rough front nine with a 4-over 40 - the highest score among Huskies after nine holes - before rebounding with four birdies and a 32 on the back. Bracht enters Tuesday's round tied for 23rd at +2 (146) overall.
Sophomore Chris Williams has the second-best score among Huskies and is tied for 33rd at +4 (148). He shot a 1-over 73 in a round that saw him card five birdies but also four bogeys and a double-bogey.
Freshman Cory McElyea and junior Ty Chambers each shot 2-over 74's on Monday. McElyea is tied for 40th overall (+5) and Chambers is tied for 60th (+9).
Sophomore Charlie Hughes shot a 3-over 75 and is tied for 54th at +8 overall.
Tee times begin at 9:00 a.m. ET tomorrow, with the Huskies teeing off at 10:00 a.m.
