LA QUINTA, Calif. -- The 100-degree weather was not the only thing that was sizzling hot on the fairways and greens of the TPC Stadium Course at PGA WEST outside of Palm Desert, Calif. on Monday.
Husky sophomore golfer Charlie Hughes (Maple Ridge, B.C) shot a career-best 6-under 66 in the second round of The Prestige and sits atop the leaderboard with a two-stroke lead at 135 (-9). His round eclipsed his previous low score of 67 set during the final day of play at the 2010 Pac-10 Championships.
Hughes, who teed off at the par-72, 7,300-yard course from the third hole, played bogey-free golf with six birdies. He is the only competitor out of 81 to record two rounds in the 60's.
"Chaz played phenomenal," said Husky head coach Matt Thurmond about Hughes. "I'm really happy for him. That was the best round of his career, on a really tough course, on a day we really needed him."
Despite a combined team score of 286 (-2) - the second-lowest round of the day out of 15 teams - Washington is +4 (580) overall. The Huskies finished the day on the leaderboard where they began - in third. California and Stanford are tied for first and are five strokes better than the Huskies at -1 (575).
Sophomore Chris Williams (Moscow, Idaho) and freshman Cory McElyea (Santa Cruz, Calif.) each shot a 1-under 71 during the second round. Williams is 1-under overall and tied for 10th.
"It was a great day for the guys. Chris played well...he just did not get anything going his way," said Thurmond.
Williams had five birdies on the day, including one on each of his last two holes - No. 2 and No. 3. Even with his strong finish, he needed both of them to make up for a double-bogey on No. 17 and bogey on No. 18.
McElyea also overcame some adversity to finish strong. He was 2-under through 10 holes before a double bogey and bogey on No. 17 and 18 pushed him to 1-over. The gritty newcomer, who previously played the course during his junior golf days, gave Thurmond a glimpse of his talent by rattling off three birdies over the next four holes.
"I think he's got a lot more of those rounds in him," said Thurmond about McElyea, who is tied for 21st at +4 (148). "He still made some mistakes, but he kept battling back after each one of them and responded well. That's a great sign."
Also competing for the Huskies are Jens Bracht and the Chambers brothers - junior Ty and freshman Gerritt. Gerrit, competing as an individual, leads the trio at +10 after his second-consecutive round of 5-over 77. He is tied for 51st.
Ty is one stroke behind at +11 and shot a 7-over 79 on Monday. Bracht shot a 78 (+6) and is tied for 71st at +15 overall.
Tuesday's final round will commence with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. Hughes is attempting to become the second Husky to win the tournament after Brock Mackenzie earned co-medalist honors in 2001.
