BOULDER CITY, NV -- Huskies sophomore Anya Alvarez shot an 8-over 80, putting her in a tie for 25th place at the windy UNLV Rebel Spring Invitational at Boulder City Golf Club.
"Obviously it was really hard out there," said Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur. "I'd say that the par was around 77 with the way the wind was blowing today."
The Dawgs are in a tie for 12th place with a combined score of 325 (37 over). There is a tie for first place between Tulsa and Texas Tech, who each shot an 18-over 306. Following Alvarez in the individual standings are Christina Yoon (82), Karinn Dickinson (82), Sadena Parks (82) and Molly Aronsson (83). The UW also brought three individuals, led by Darcie Richmond (82), Katie Saucier (84) and Nicole Ferrero (87). The individual leader after the first round is Georgia's Marty Silva, who was the invite's only scorer under par, carding a 2-under 70.
Mulflur said that wind gusts reached approximately 35 miles per hour on Monday, exposing her team's inexperience.
"We showed our immaturity today with the conditions the way they were," she said. "Part of it is not trusting what you are capable of doing. We started out well, but as soon as something went wrong, we crumbled. Hopefully you learn from that and are ready for it the next time it happens."
Husky tee times are set to start at 8:58 a.m. with Molly Aronsson teeing off from the first hole and Anya Alvarez will conclude Tuesday's start at 9:30 a.m. Live scoring is available, click here.
