HONOLULU - The ninth-ranked Washington volleyball team swept its seventh straight opponent Friday night, defeating Saint Mary's, 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-16) in the second day of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational. With the win, the Huskies move to 7-0 on the season.
For only the second time in 21 sets this season, Washington allowed an opponent to score 20 or more points in a single set. The Dawgs boasted a balanced attack against the Gaels, with two players recording double-doubles. Sophomore outside hitter Kindra Carlson recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 kills and 15 digs and hit .385 for the second-best attack percentage on the team. Junior outside hitter Jill Collymore recorded her third double-double of the season with 16 kills and 10 digs. Collymore also served up one ace and hit .297 on the evening. Senior middle blocker Jessica Swarbrick led the team in hitting for the second straight match, recording seven kills on 10 swings for a .500 attack percentage. She also chipped in a solo block and three block assists. Junior Airial Salvo racked up 10 kills and eight digs, hitting .321 for the match.
Defensively, Jenna Hagglund put up 39 of the team's 43 assists and contributed two block assists. In total, the Huskies racked up 5.0 blocks as a team. Junior libero Tamari Miyashiro notched 14 digs.
As a team, Washington hit .325 for the match and held the Gaels to .174 attack percentage. The Huskies picked up 48 kills to the Gaels' 34 and out-assisted St. Mary's 43-32. Washington also out-paced the Gaels in service aces, 3-2 and in digs, 60-46. Saint Mary's out-blocked the Dawgs, 7.0-5.0.
The Huskies dominated the third set, taking the first two sets off a kill by Collymore and a bad set from the Gaels. The teams traded points until the match was tied 7-7. Washington took three straight points to begin the break the match open. The Huskies kept at least two points between themselves at St. Mary's until the Dawgs went on a 13-6 run to close the set out. Collymore was on fire in the third set, recording nine kills.
Set two started with the Gaels taking the first point, and holding a brief 3-1 lead. But Washington quickly retaliated and snapped off a 10-3 run, creating a six point lead for itself. Though St. Mary's got to within three points, the Huskies were able to put the match out of reach. Carlson hit .667 to lead the Huskies in the second set, connecting on four of six swings.
In the first set, Washington jumped out to a quick lead, taking four straight points to drive the score to 5-1. The Gaels would not back down, tying the score seven times and briefly taking the lead once. Washington maintained a small lead through the next several points, but the Gaels knotted the match at 19-19, forcing Washington into a timeout. Saint Mary's took the next point and the lead, 19-20. Washington strung together the next six straight points, off three kills by Salvo and a kill by Carlson to cut the Gaels' rally short.
