Head Coach Tia Jackson
General Comments:
"I thought we played an amazing basketball game. The Huskies are definitely back. UCLA is a very good team. We had some drop off to start the game. We picked it up in the second part of the first half. Then we turned around in the second half and took a little drop, but we never said die. I love that about this team. We are in a very good place and I told my players, `it's not how we start, it's how we finish.' We are headed in the right direction and to a great place. On the pattern of comebacks: "They're fearless. These kids are hungry. Anyone that thinks that they are going to come in here, or we are going to go to their place and they are going to let us go down ten and think the game is over; they got another thing coming. We are in a very good place right now. We are definitely ascending and not descending."
On the last possession: "We had seven seconds so Emily [Florence] just tried to penetrate and everyone else tried to spot up around her. There is really no play to draw up to go the length of the court. We were going to try and do a Cameron Dollar from UCLA back in the day. They were very athletic. They had some people get in front of Emily so she had her vision blurred and she had [Andrea Plouffe] trailing. I'll take that shot any day."
UW Sophomore Guard Sami Whitcomb:
On getting the ball during the last play:
"Yes, I did. I felt like I was shooting a bit better the second half. I would have liked to get that last shot but I would much rather have us get a shot than not get one. I was glad that we at least had the opportunity. Dre (Andrea Plouffe) had a good look."
On being covered at the end:
"There was someone there and I couldn't see much so it would have been a tough pass."
On the team keeping itself alive:
"We were trying to keep the energy going, when we take charges that really gets us a lot of energy. We are just trying to build off of it and get some momentum for us particularly when we are down in the last couple minutes of the game. We're encouraging each other to keep shooting even if we aren't making shots. Play good defense, one stop at a time."
On shooting better the second half:
"We all thought that we were getting pretty good looks with the exception of a few shots. Katelan was on fire during the first half so we kept trying to get her the ball. Our shots will drop and they really started to the second half, we aren't worried about that. We know our shots will fall we just have to keep taking them. I think we did a good job at that tonight."
On coming from behind:
"We knew we were right there and I don't think we ever doubted that we could win, that we were going to win. I think we really thought that we were going to win, it's heartbreaking. At the same time I think that we're continuing to get better, we're improving, and we have to focus on that at this point. We can't focus on the loss at this point, we have to keep building on our wins. I think we're still getting better, we haven't plateuaed yet."
UW Freshman Guard/Forward Katelan Redmon:
On being guarded during the last possession:
"Yeah I think they were on me pretty well there at the end."
On wanting the ball:
"Who doesn't? My shot was hitting tonight but Dre had a good look."
On the team getting better despite the loss:
"Yeah we definitely are, our defense is back on. Our press, we were slowing them down a lot. They were struggling through their offense and we were getting some turnovers."
