
Morrison Leads No. 8 UW Past Cougars

PULLMAN, Wash. - Christal Morrison had 15 kills and Stevie Mussie added 13 to lead the No. 8 Washington volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of in-state rival Washington State on Friday night. The Huskies pounded out 57 kills and hit .322 on their way to defeating the host Cougars, 30-22, 30-18, 30-24. Washington remains undefeated at 14-0 and 3-0 in Pac-10 play, while Washington State fell to 9-8 and 0-3 in the Pac-10.
Washington hit .375 in the first game and .382 in game two while holding the Cougars to just a .145 hitting percentage overall. WSU had just 34 kills on the night and managed no more than 12 kills in any of the three games.
Becky Perry added nine kills and hit .667, Jessica Swarbrick had eight kills and hit .467 and Alesha Deesing finished the night with seven kills and a .455 hitting clip for the Huskies. Jenna Hagglund led all players with 46 assists and added 11 digs, while Tamari Miyashiro and Megan McAfee had 21 and nine digs, respectively.
For WSU, Tara West tallied 10 kills, and teammates Jackie Albright and Cassie Robbins had seven kills each. Maureen Perez led WSU with 29 assists and Kelly Hyder led the Cougars with 14 digs.
Washington returns home to host Arizona State next Thursday at 7 p.m. It will be the first home match for the Huskies since they hosted the season-opening Husky Classic back on Aug. 24-25. UW had 11 straight matches on the road after playing three home matches in the Husky Classic.
NOTES: UW has now won 9 matches in a row against Washington State, dating back to the 2003 season ... The last time WSU defeated the Huskies was on Nov. 8, 2002 in Pullman ...Washington leads the all-time series with WSU 52-21 ... Miyashiro had a personal season-best eight assists ... Perry led UW with six total blocks ... Deesing and Swarbrick had five total blocks each ... Ashley Aratani had a personal season-high three services aces for UW.
