On Cal State Northridge:
We really felt confident. We knew that they were an up-tempo team and that we needed to move the ball. We did that.On starting off the bench: I can't just sit back and settle with this game. I have to get out and keep playing defense and get my spot back.
Coach Lorenzo Romar
General Comments:
Well Ryan Appelby hurt his back. Nothing serious, just back spasms but he couldn't go in there and really do some damage. Some other guy stepped up and did three's and did a nice impersonation of him so that was nice. There were too many turnovers for us, and some defensive lapses. Some intense defense and decent hustle down the stretch enabled us to separate ourselves from Northridge. On Cal State Northridge: They did a nice job. Coach Braswell and his staff year to year do a nice job. They've been pretty successful in their non-conference and we told the guys that they have a lot of fight in them. They did a good job.
On improvements: I didn't think we made a big step today. I don't think we improved defensively tonight. I thought there were times we did a really good job and forced them to turn the ball over and take bad shots, but I didn't think tonight was where we can look back and say, "Hey we made another huge step." I don't think that's the case.
Head Coach Bobby Braswell
General Statement:
"This is a difficult place to play and they're a very good basketball team. I thought our guys did not play the greatest, maybe about a C+ or a B-. We can play better, we just need some guys stepping up and playing. I know they're looking forward to getting into conference and getting healthy. When you're on the road, victory favors the team that makes the fewest mistakes. You can't make the kind of mistakes we made. When we cut the lead down to two, got the crowd out of the game and then turned the ball over three straight times, that was the game right there."On the foul situation hampering their style of play: "One of our best players had two fouls in the first three minutes of the game. We did commit a lot of fouls and we didn't play with our feet but I think our biggest problem was we didn't rebound the ball. They got way too many second shots and Brockman got us in some trouble down there. We have got to get bigger and stronger somehow."
On Ryan Appleby: "We ran a little box and one on him and I thought our guys did a very good job of that. I think he's a little hobbled too with back spasms. We just wanted to be close enough to have a chance and at one point in the half we actually cut it to two, which gives you a chance to win, but then we turned it over three straight times."
