
No. 33 Washington Defeats The Wildcats

Tucson, Ariz. - The Washington men's tennis team (15-4, 2-1) rolled to its second conference victory of the season defeating Arizona (11-7, 2-2), 5-2, in Tucson, Ariz. Washington won its first Pac-10 match against the Arizona Sun Devils just two days earlier in Tempe Ariz.
In doubles play the Huskies displayed their resolve winning two of the three matches in tiebreakers. In the first doubles position No. 33 Alex Slovic and Daniel Chu were able to defeat Arizona's top ranked Jeff Groslimond and Claudio Christen in a 9-8 (7-5) decision. Clinching the first team point for the Huskies were Andy Kuharszky and Klaus Jank on the second doubles court. The pair was victorious over the Wildcat's Matalonga and VanderMerwe 9-8 (7-4).
Tight play continued on the third doubles court, where Jean-Noel Insausti and Mike Ricks were edged out 8-6 by Bruno Alaca and Peter Zimmer of Arizona. The Huskies tallied the same amount of games in doubles play as the Wildcats, but were able to take away two of the three matches en route to winning the first team point of the match.
Aided by a boost of confidence after having won the double point, the Huskies were able to prevail on the singles courts as well. Jank was able to acquire the second team point for UW by defeating Peter Simmer 6-4, 7-6(5) on the sixth singles court. Kuharszky was unable to prevail in the fifth position, losing in straight sets to Jason Labrosse 6-3, 6-1.
Arizona's Claudio Christen defeated the Dawg's No. 90 Jean-Noel Insausti 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 giving the Wildcats their second team point. With the match standing at a 2-2 tie, Pierre Metenier opened things up in the second singles spot winning the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 over Jeff Groslimond.
Daniel Chu was able to clinch the match for the Huskies with a thee set victory over Bruno Alcala. Chu dropped the first set back rallied back and eventually won the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Alex Slovic completed the competition by dispatching No. 43 Matalonga 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4.
Washington will continue conference play against the USC Trojans on their home court at 1:30 p.m. on April 14. The Huskies defeated the Trojans twice during the 2005 season, once during dual play and again in the second round of the NCAA Team Championship.
