SEATTLE - Washington's Tim Lincecum suffered his first loss of the season as the Husky baseball team fell to the University of San Diego, 8-4, on a cold Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark.
Lincecum (3-1) gave up seven runs, though only three earned, on eight hits over five-plus innings. He walked four and struck out eight and was removed from the game after the first three batters in the sixth reached base.
The Huskies fell to 12-5 on the season with the loss while San Diego improved to 9-8.
USD starter Ricardo Pecina (1-1) picked up the win. He worked five and one-third innings, allowing three runs on nine hits and one walk while fanning five. Josh Butler, the Toreros' top starting pitcher, threw the eighth and ninth to pick up his first save.
The Toreros scored the game's first runs in the third inning. With Josh Romanski on board via a leadoff walk, center fielder Justin Snyder belted his first home run of the year to right field, giving the visitors a 2-0 advantage.
Later in the inning, Kevin Hansen walked and scored on a double from Steve Singleton. Then, after Keoni Ruth reached on an error and stole second to put runners at second and third, Daniel Magness chopped a ball over the mound off of Lincecum's glove for a single. However, once Lincecum got to the ball, his throw to first was off-line, allowing both runners to score and increasing the Toreros' lead to 5-0.
In the bottom of the third, the Huskies got on the board when freshman shortstop Bradley Boyer hit a one-out solo homer to left, his second of the year.
In the sixth, the Toreros got two more when Ryan Lilly reached on an error and scored on a double from Josh Romanski, who eventually came around on a sacrifice fly to increase the USD lead to 7-1.
The UW scored two more in the sixth. After a single from Matt Lane and a double from Curt Rindal put two aboard with one out, Kyle Conley singled to drive in one. Matt Stevens' fielder's choice groundout sent Rindal across to make it 7-3. In the seventh, Jake Rife singled to drive in Matt Hague, who had singled and stolen second.
Lane, the UW catcher, led the Husky hitters, going 3-for-4. Rindal, Boyer, Hague and Conley added two hits apiece. USD got two hits apiece from Singleton, Romanski, Magness and Shane Buschini, whose two-out RBI double in the ninth tacked on the Toreros' final run of the night.
The Huskies and Toreros complete the two-game series Wednesday with a 2:00 p.m. game. Live audio broadcasts and live stats of the game will be available at gohuskies.com.
