Fayetteville, Ark. - The 20th ranked Arkansas Gym'Backs (7-9, 2-4 SEC) posted a 196.350 to defeat the Washington Huskies (5-13, 2-9 Pac-10) Sunday morning. The Gym'Backs team score tied their season record high, which they first posted on Feb. 23. Arkansas led the way on all events but vault, where the Huskies and the Gym'Backs both scored a 49.000.
Senior Kelly McDonald took home her first all-around title of the season with a season high 39.175. She was the only all-arounder to score a 39.000 or better.
The Huskies were off to a slow start on bars where McDonald led the Dawgs with a 9.775, her lowest score of the season. She placed fourth on the event, but the Gym'Backs were able to create an early lead with their 49.000 team vault score.
The Huskies moved to vault where they made a strong statement. The Washington team vault score marks the first time this season the Huskies have reached a 49.000. Freshman Ashley Houghting led the Dawgs on vault with a 9.875. Houghting went on to win the event title, her 8th vault win of the season. She is now the fourth-ranked freshman Husky title winner of all time, behind Yumi Mordre (19 in 1986), Wendi Gangwer (18 in 1984), and Suzie Sun (17 in 1981).
All-arounders Chelsea Bakken and McDonald came in third and fourth with a 9.825 and 9.800. Bakken matched her season high and McDonald, competing for only the second time on vault this season, posted a new season high.
On floor the Huskies performed well, but could not seem to get the high scores they needed. The Gym'Backs swept the first five places counting high scores of 9.925 and 9.900 by senior Emily Peacock and sophomore Katie Hardman. McDonald, freshman Kristen Omori, and Houghting all tied for seventh with a 9.725.
McDonald led the Huskies on beam where she finished fourth with a 9.875. The team struggled through the event and scored a 47.200, their lowest beam total of the season.
The Huskies will return home to take finals before traveling Corvallis, Ore. for their last regular season meet of the year. Washington will compete against Oregon State Friday March 17th at 7:00 pm (PST).
