Husky Golfers Improve to Third at West Regional

Stanford, CA - The Washington men's golf team is one round away from making its seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships after the Huskies moved up to third at the West Regional Championship. Entering Saturday's final round, the Huskies are tied with New Mexico for third place at 8-over 568. Washington shot 2-over 282 during Friday's second round at Stanford to solidify its chances for a return to the national championships.
Husky freshman Joe Panzeri used birdies on holes 16 and 18 to lead Washington with a 1-under 69. That figures as his lowest round as a collegiate. His previous best score was a 71 in his first tournament of the season. Panzeri carded a 74 during the first round of play and stands 21st at 143.
UW sophomores Alex Prugh and Erik Olson both shot even-par 70 to stay among the tournament's leaders. Olson, the Pac-10 Champion, carded three birdies during his back nine to overcome a slow start that saw him collect five bogies and two birdies on his first nine holes. He is sixth at 1-under 139. Prugh stood at 2-under before bogies on 17 and 18 brought him back to par. He enters the final round in 16th pladce at 1-over 141.
Husky freshman Zach Bixler shot 3-over 73 to move up to 82nd at 150 while James Lepp suffered a tough finish, going four-over on his final two holes, to shoot 75 and drop back to 60th at 147.
UNLV leads the regional at 2-under 558 while BYU is six shots ahead of the Huskies and Lobos at 562. Pepperdine and Arizona State are tied for fifth at 571.
BYU's Oscar Alvarez lead the field by four shots at 6-under 134. Four players are tied for second at 138 including UNLV's Ryan Moore, UCLA's Kevin Chappell, Arizona's Nathan Lashley and Arizona State's Pat Moore.
