SEATTLE - For the second straight day, the Washington baseball team managed only one run as USC beat the Huskies, 5-1, in the second-game of a Pac-10 series at Husky Ballpark.
The Trojans (17-8 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-10) beat the Huskies, 2-1, Friday. Washington fell to 17-12 overall and 1-4 in the conference with Saturday's loss.
USC starter Jack Spradlin (2-1) held the UW to the one run on nine hits in his first career complete game. The junior right-hander walked two and struck out four. Husky starter Kyle Parker (4-4) struggled with his control in the loss, walking seven over five and two- thirds innings. He gave up five runs on five hits.
USC jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first and two more in the second. In the first, catcher Jeff Clement walked and eventually came around on a two-out single from Baron Frost. In the second, Matt Cusick singled and scored on a single from Hector Estrella. Estrella then moved to second on a wild pitch, third on a balk and scored on a successful squeeze bunt from Dale Legaspi.
Washington scored its first run in the third. With Kiel Lillibridge and Taylor Johnson aboard at second and third, Brent Lillibridge reached on an infield single to send home his younger brother, cutting the Trojans' lead to 3-1.
In the sixth, the Trojans loaded the bases with two outs as Matt Cusick and Dale Legaspi walked and Blake Sharpe was hit by a pitch. UW freshman Brandon McKerney relieved Parker and Clement, a two-year member of the U.S. National Team, came through with a hard single through the right side to drive in two runs and increase the Trojans' lead to 5-1.
The Huskies had runners aboard in every inning except the first and fifth, but left nine on base in the game. Every UW starter had one hit.
McKerney, a freshman from Meadowdale, worked the final three and one-third innings, allowing only one hit and facing the minimum over the last three innings.
The Huskies and Trojans complete the three-game series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game. Live audio and stats will be available at gohuskies.com.
