UW Golfers Finish Second at Spartan Invitational

SALINAS, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Washington women's golf team placed second behind defending NCAA Champion UCLA at San Jose State's Spartan Invitational held at Corral de Tierra in Salinas, Calif. The Huskies shot 6-over 290 during Wednesday's final round to finish two strokes behind the Bruins at 870. UCLA picked up one stroke on UW over the final 18 holes, finishing at 868. The field consisted of 15 teams.
The tournament marked the fourth time in six tournament appearances this year the Huskies have placed second. Washington also has a third and fifth-place showing this season.
Junior Paige Mackenzie led the Husky contingency with a fourth-place finish at 1-over 214. That was her best place-finish this year.It marked the third time this season and the 14th time in her career she's placed in the top-10. She is third on UW's all-time list for top-10 finishes. Former All-American Kelli Kamimura tops that chart with 20. Mackenzie also tied the UW record for best gross second-round score in a tournament when she carded a 68 Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman Kim Shin was sixth overall at 3-over 216. It was Shin's fourth top-10 showing and matched her best finish as a collegiate. Sophomore Amber Prange cracked the top-10 for the first time this year with a ninth-place finish at 5-over 218. It was her best score of the season. Prange posted an even-par 71 during the final round, the best closing score of any Husky. Sung Ea Lee was 17th at 222 while Amy Wang was 55th at 236.
Like Washington, UCLA placed three of its five golfers in the top-10, led by Susie Mathews who shot a three-under 68 in the final round to finish third with a 213. Charlotte Mayorkas finished tied for fourth after shooting a one-over 72, for a three-round total of 214. Amie Cochran finished tied for sixth with a 216 after shooting a 74 Wednesday. California's Sofie Andersson claimed medalist honos by five strokes, finishing at 7-under 206.
Washington plays at the Duck Invitational March 21-22 in Eugene.
