Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. - Led by a 3-under 68 from junior Sung Ea Lee, the fourth-ranked Washington women's golf team turned in the best final round score of the day to finish fifth at the Northrop Grumman Regional Championship at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. Washington shot 294 during the final round, 10 strokes better than the next best team, to finish the 54-hole event at 906. Ninth-ranked Pepperdine won the team title with a score of 896. The Waves finished two strokes ahead of second-ranked UCLA and were four shots better than top-ranked Duke. Florida, ranked 22, placed third at 904.
Lee's final round, that included four birdies and one bogie, marked the third straight tournament she has shot either 67 or 68 on the final day of play. She leaped from 57th to 15th on the final leaderboad with a three-day total of 13-over 226.
All-American Paige Mackenzie was Washington's top finisher. She carded a 74 Wednesday to place ninth at 10-over 223. The finish marked the 13th time in Mackenzie's career she has placed in the top-10. That moves her into a tie for third on Washington's all-time list with former teammate Louise Friberg. Only Kelli Kammimura (20) and Dodie Mazzuca (18) have more top-10 finishes than Mackenzie. It was the second time this year she has led the Huskies in scoring and was her second top-10 finish of the season.
Sophomore Amy Wang also carded a 3-over 74 during the final round for Washington. She tied with Lee for 15th overall, the best finish in her UW career. Amber Prange was 48th at 235 while Kim Shin was 61st at 235.
Duke's Brittany Lang held on to her lead to take medalist honors by four strokes at even-par 213. UCLA's Charlote Mayorkas was second at 217.
The Huskies have a month off before return to action March 8-9 at San Jose State's Spartan Invitational.
