Lepp Crushes Husky Golf Scoring Record

Waikoloa, Hawaii - Behind the record-setting performance of junior James Lepp, the Washington men's golf team shattered the school's 54-hole tournament scoring record by 18 strokes to finish fourth at the Taylor Made Waikoloa Intercollegiate held at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course. The Huskies shot 48-under 816 during the three-day event which third-ranked Oklahoma State won with a 63-under 801.
Lepp placed second overall, shooting 18-under 198. He broke Washington's previous 54-hole tournament record by four strokes. Lepp tied his best collegiate score with a 7-under 65 during Friday's final round. He opened play with a 66 and followed that up with a 67 during the second round. Lepp placed three strokes behind Oklahoma State's Tyler Leon, who took medalist honors with a 21-under 195.
Entering the tournament Lepp had failed to break par during his three previous tournaments as a Husky. He was a second-team All-American at Illinois in 2003 before transferring to Washington. His previous 65 came during his sophomore season at Illinois at the Northern Intercollegiate.
Husky sophomore Alex Prugh was 21st at 10-under 206, bettering his previous best tournament score by three strokes. Zach Bixler was 24th at 9-under 207, Erik Olson was 42nd at 6-under 210 and Travis Andrews placed 80th at even-par 216.
Prugh's performance marked the first time he posted back-to-back rounds in the 60s. He sandwiched a career-best 66 and a 69 between an 80 during last season's Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational. Bixler's 207 bettered his previous best tournament score by five strokes. His 66 during the first round was his low score as a collegiate. Olson's back-to-back 68s during the final two rounds marked the first time he carded a pair of 60s during a tournament. His 210 equaled his best collegiate outing from last fall at Stanford's Nelson Tournament.
Washington shot 14-under 274 during Friday's final round, the Huskies highest single-round score during the tournament. The team's 816 bettered the previous tourney scoring record of 834 set during the 2002 Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz. That event was staged on a par-70 course where the Huskies finished 6-under par.
The Huskies return to the links Feb. 21-22 when they host the Washington National Winter Championship.
