Washington Volleyball Defeats No. 2 USC In Five Games
September 26, 2004 | Volleyball
"We played well when we had to," said head coach Jim McLaughlin. "We showed good composure when the match got tight and it's really the first time we've done that all year. We made big plays when we had to make big plays. Sanja came alive in the last two games. She wasn't herself early on but played great in the end. Candace Lee was steady and did what she does everyday. It was a fun match."
The teams were dead even in kills with 80 apiece, while USC held the advantage in hitting percentage (.196-.284) and blocks (21-7).
The Huskies used a balanced attack en route to the victory as four player recorded kills in the double-digits. Christal Morrison and Sanja Tomasevic each tallied double-doubles with 18 kills and 16 digs for Morrison and 18 kills and 14 digs for Tomasevic. Brie Hagerty also notched 18 kills for UW and Darla Myhre added 11 kills. Setter Courtney Thompson dished 62 assists.
Candace Lee led Washington's defensive effort with 22 digs, while Danka Danicic and Thompson chipped in 14 digs each. Myhre led the team with seven blocks, while Morrison added five.
The Huskies return to action next week when they make their home debut against Oregon on Oct. 1. UW then takes on Oregon State on Oct. 2. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m. starts.
