Seattle - Despite recording the second-best score in school history, the 12th-ranked Washington women's gymnastics team could not pull off its second-straight upset of a top-10 team, finishing second in a four-way meet that was won by sixth-ranked Utah. The Utes turned in their third best score ever (197.950) to win the meet while Washington managed a season-best 197.550. Iowa was third at 196.900 and Illinois-Chicago placed fourth at 195.175.
The Huskies managed to win or tie for first on all four events.
The Husky effort was highlighted by senior Emily Pritchard, who tied the school record while winning the all-around with a score of 39.825. It was her third all-around victory of the season. Pritchard won three event titles and recorded the first 10 of her career on vault. She scored 9.975 to take top honors on bars while tying Utah's Melissa Vituj for first on beam with a 9.925. The Utes Annabeth Eberle tied Pritchard on vault by also recording a perfect score.
Utah came from behind to win the meet in the final two events. The Utes scored 49.550 on floor and 49.650 on vault to move past the Huskies in the standings and improve their record to 11-1. The Huskies improved to 9-4-1.
Washington started the meet with a strong showing on vault. The Huskies equaled their best score of the season, scoring 49.275 thanks to Pritchard's 10. She became just the fourth UW gymnast to record a 10 on the event. Tacia LaBatte (9.925) and Tori Quandt (9.650) also equaled their career best marks on vault to boost the Huskies' score.
While the Huskies' opening score was impressive, Utah led after the first rotation by scoring 49.500 on bars. Melissa Vituj, Rachel Tidd and Annabeth Eberele each scored 9.925 to lead the Utes on the event.
Washington took the lead during the second rotation when it scored 49.625 on bars while Utah was recording a 49.250 on beam. Pritchard, who has been ranked No. 1 in the nation on uneven bars for the past eight weeks, scored a near-perfect 9.975 to win the event for the seventh time this season. Carly Dockendorf aided the Huskies' cause by posting a season high 9.950 on the event.
Utah charged back into the lead during the third rotation with a 49.450 on floor while the Huskies managed just 49.025 on beam. Washington was hurt by a fall during Kelly McDonald's routine as Washington's number-five competitor. McDonald returned to Washington's all-around lineup for the first time in three weeks due to a heel injury. Pritchard kept up her torrid scoring pace during the third rotation by posting a 9.925 on beam to tie Utah's Vituj for first place honors.
Holding a .350 lead going into the final event, Utah had four vaulters, led by Eberle's 10, score 9.925 or better to secure the victory. Washington made the contest interesting by tying the school record with a 49.600 on floor during the final rotation. LaBatte tied her career high with a 9.950 to share first-place honors with Dockendorf, Iowa's Alexis and Utah's Eberle. McDonald and Pritchard helped the Huskies by both scoring 9.925.
The two teams split the event titles. Utah managed to win vault (49.650) and and beam (49.250), while the Huskies posted the top score of bars (49.625) and floor (49.600).
Washington will travel to Seattle Pacific on Monday and then host the Falcons and Boise State next Friday at 7 p.m. at Bank of America Arena in the final home meet of the season.
