Washington Falls, 5-0, To Second-Ranked Stanford In USTA/ITA Team Indoor Semifinals

SEATTLE, Wash. - Washington's seventh-ranked women's tennis team (5-1) lost for the first time this season, falling 5-0 to the second ranked and top seeded Stanford Cardinal in the semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors in Madison, Wisconsin. The fifth seeded Husky women made a strong 2-1 showing at the prestigious event.
Washington's top two singles players, junior Dea Sumantri and senior Claire Carter were in close, three-set battles when Stanford clinched the match, suspending the remainder of the action. Stanford had the seventh and 20th-ranked singles players going at third and fourth singles and they were too strong on this day for Husky senior Erin Hoe and sophomore Dinka Hadzic, who lost in straight sets. Junior Mugette Ahn lost her first dual match of the season, going down 6-4 in the third set to Stanford's Emilia Anderson.
The Cardinal swept the doubles point despite the efforts of Carter and Sumantri at No. 1 doubles. The 29th-ranked team came within mere points of pulling a big upset over the nation's sixth best duo of Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette, but lost the tiebreaker 8-6.
The semifinal appearance was the strongest showing at the USTA/ITA Team Indoors in history for Washington. The Huskies ousted two top-25 opponents on their run to the semis, beating 23rd-ranked Tennessee 6-1 in the opening round on Thursday, and upsetting 6th-ranked Vanderbilt 4-3 in Friday's quarterfinals.
Washington's overall mark at the Team Indoors drops to 5-4, having also competed in 2001 and 2002. The USTA/ITA Team Indoor Championships continues Sunday when Stanford faces second-seeded Georgia at 11 a.m CT.
Up next, the Huskies return home to face Sacramento State on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 1:30 at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center.
