Women's Tennis Advances To Quarterfinals At USTA/ITA National Team Indoors

MADISON, Wisc.- For the first time in the program's history, Washington women's tennis (4-0) advanced to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Team Indoor Championships, prevailing 6-1 over the 23rd-ranked Tennessee Volunteers in Madison, Wisconsin. The Huskies, ranked seventh and seeded fifth in the tournament, had been winless in their two previous opening round matches. The undefeated women advance to face No. 6 Vanderbilt on Friday beginning at 3 p.m.
Things couldn't have been more heartbreaking to start the match for Washington, as they dropped all three doubles matches in tiebreaks. But instead of hanging their heads, the Huskies came streaking back to sweep singles play and pick up the win.
35th-ranked senior Claire Carter and Tennessee's Tammy Encina split two tiebreaks at number one singles before Carter took control in the third, and upset the 13th-ranked Volunteer, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (4), 6-3. Husky junior Dea Sumantri clinched the match at No. 2 singles with a convincing straight set win, and sophomore Dinka Hadzic and junior Mugette Ahn followed suit. 90th-ranked freshman Saskia Nauenberg was pushed to three sets at five singles but held on to defeat Vicky Jones 6-2 in the third. At No. 3 singles, senior Erin Hoe stood down one set and at 5-5 in the second, before she reeled off eight-straight games to beat Tennessee's Ashley Robards 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.
Washington improves their overall mark at the Team Indoors to 4-3, having also competed in 2001 and 2002. The USTA/ITA Team Indoor Championships continues through Sunday at the University of Wisconsin.
